You ask the audience if they are familiar with the ‘four seasons.’ As we all know, each season brings a special feeling and a unique experience in nature.

You can tell many stories about the seasons, but then it’s time to make a choice: which season is your favorite? The spectator names their favorite season. From the very beginning, a mysterious envelope has been standing in plain sight.

Did you know that all seasons are connected by the rainbow? You take out the rainbow ribbon and explain that it can be threaded through the holes in all the cards except for the chosen season! For example, if ‘Summer’ is chosen, the summer card is first pulled up from the deck so the sun is visible. Then, the ribbon is threaded through all the remaining holes, and the spectator is asked to hold the ends of the ribbon firmly.

Now, we push the ‘Sun’ card back into the deck, right through the rainbow ribbon. Just like that, everything is connected by the rainbow once again… The sun is back where it belongs, with summer and all the other seasons. No matter how hard you try, the card will not fall out because it is securely locked back in its place.

Next, we locate the ‘Sun’ card again and pull it up from the deck. You will see that the ribbon is now neatly threaded through the hole of the sun card! The rainbow provides true magic; it is both incredible and impossible.

But the magic doesn’t stop there. As a mind-blowing climax, you direct everyone’s attention back to the envelope that has been there the entire time. You open it to reveal a single card inside: it is the exact season the spectator chose! A perfect prediction that proves you knew the outcome all along.

The Evolution of a Shared Concept

The original idea for this effect was shared with me by Anton Jung about four years ago and was based on a clever old magic principle.
